A tree that was picked for speed, not longevity
Silver maple got planted all over Madison during the postwar building boom for one simple reason - it grows faster than almost any other shade tree available at the time, putting real canopy over a brand-new brick ranch within a decade instead of two or three. Builders and early homeowners wanted shade fast, and silver maple delivered exactly that. What it didn't come with was a warning label about what that speed costs the tree structurally over the following seventy years, which is roughly how long a lot of these original plantings have now been in the ground.
Fast growth in a maple means soft, weak wood and a root system that spreads wide and shallow rather than deep, chasing surface moisture instead of anchoring down. That combination made for a great looking yard in 1962 and a genuine driveway problem in 2026.
Walk a few of the older streets off Neelys Bend or down toward Amqui and you can usually spot which houses still have their original tree standing just by the size of the crack running through the concrete out front - a rough field guide to a subdivision's construction year, decades before anyone thought to check a plat map.
Why the roots go sideways instead of down
Silver maple roots naturally grow close to the surface even in open ground, and a Madison lot with a driveway, a sidewalk, and a house foundation all within a few dozen feet of the trunk gives those roots very little room to spread without hitting something. Concrete offers a flatter, more stable surface than surrounding soil for a root to grow against, so a root pushing outward from the trunk will often run directly under a slab rather than around it, thickening year after year until the concrete above it has nowhere left to go but up.
By the time a homeowner notices a driveway edge lifting or a sidewalk panel tilting, the root underneath it is usually already several inches thick and has been pushing for a decade or more.
It's not unusual for one of these roots to travel diagonally across an entire driveway rather than straight toward the street, following whatever path of compacted, easily-followed soil gives it the least resistance on the way.
What removing the tree does and doesn't fix
Taking down a silver maple that's already lifted a driveway stops the problem from getting worse, but it doesn't undo the lift that's already happened - the concrete stays where the root pushed it until someone repairs or replaces that section separately. What stump grinding does solve is the part that keeps causing damage after the tree's gone: a stump left in place, even cut flush, still has a living root system underneath that can keep growing for a season or two before it finally dies back completely.
Grinding the stump out removes the growth point that root system needs to keep pushing, which is why we recommend it even on a tree that's already been cut down and seemingly dealt with.

What we actually find once we're grinding through one
A silver maple stump on a typical Madison lot often surprises people with how far the root flare extends once we're actually into it - roots running six or eight feet from the trunk aren't unusual, especially toward whichever direction had the most concrete or compacted soil to grow against. We grind wider than the visible stump on these specifically because leaving a section of root flare untouched near a driveway edge just sets up the same lifting problem for whatever gets planted there next.

That extra width matters most on the side of the stump facing whatever it had been pushing against for decades, since that's usually where the thickest, most established root sits and where a shallow grind would leave the real problem sitting just under a fresh layer of soil.
