The stump is two hundred feet back and still your problem

Lots in Marlin Meadows are narrow at the street and very long behind, averaging around an acre and a sixth, with a few running to three. The house sits near the front, and the stump is almost always somewhere in the last third of the yard, far enough that people put off dealing with it for a year or two because it is not in anybody's way from the kitchen window.

What finally forces the call is usually one of three things. The mower deck catches an edge that has weathered proud of the grass. A rotten water oak has left a soft ring the kids find with a bicycle. So we make a judgment call on the day, not on the calendar. Dry, and we take the shortest line and you will never know we crossed it. Damp, and we either lay boards over the soft stretch or shift the appointment. We would rather move you two days than fix a lawn. Half these driveways are not long enough for a truck and trailer, which puts the rig on the shoulder of Neelys Bend Road or on Berwick Trail while we work. Neely's Bend Elementary is right there, and that road stacks up hard at drop-off and again in the afternoon pickup window.

We schedule around it rather than pretending it is not happening. Morning appointments here start after the buses clear, and we plan to be loaded and gone before the afternoon queue builds. If a job is big enough to run through the middle of the day, we park deeper into the subdivision on a side street and walk the equipment in rather than leaving a trailer half in a travel lane on a road with no shoulder to speak of.

Water oak, sweetgum, and the pine that gums the grinder

The back thirds of these yards carry a specific mix. Water oak is the workhorse, dense enough to slow the feed but predictable, with a compact base for its canopy. Sweetgum is the one homeowners are gladdest to see gone, and its stump is fibrous and stringy rather than hard, so it grinds quickly and throws a lot of volume for its diameter.

Loblolly pine is the one that changes the plan. Pine is resinous, and the sap loads the cutting wheel and packs the chute, which means stopping to clear rather than running straight through. The chips also mat down wet and hold moisture instead of drying out. On a pine job we usually recommend hauling the material rather than leaving a slab of it on the lawn, and we say so in the quote instead of leaving you with a mound to deal with.
