Your front-yard stump is thirty feet from a four-lane road

Graycroft Avenue averages a 1963 build across better than two hundred addresses, with lots running around three quarters of an acre and a good number of them fronting Old Hickory Boulevard. The shade trees that came with those houses were planted where shade was wanted, which is between the porch and the road, and sixty years on the biggest water oaks and white oaks in the neighborhood are sitting well inside thirty feet of a four-lane arterial.

That position turns an ordinary stump into a logistics problem. There is no quiet driveway to work from. Traffic on Old Hickory does not slow down for a work van, the shoulder is narrow, and the mailbox and the utility pole are competing for the same few feet as the stump. Meanwhile the homeowner is looking at a knee-high trunk they cannot mow around and a strip of dead grass in the most visible part of their property.

Setting up on a road that does not slow down

A frontage job here gets treated like roadside work, because it is. Cones go out well upstream of the machine so drivers get warning at speed rather than at the last second, the truck is positioned as the barrier between traffic and the operator, and nobody works with their back to the boulevard.

We also plan the hours around the road rather than around convenience. Mid-morning to early afternoon is the window where Old Hickory is manageable. We stay off it during the afternoon build-up toward Rivergate, and we do not stage in a turn lane at any hour. It is slower than pulling into somebody's driveway and getting straight to work, and it is not something we surcharge for. It is simply what grinding a stump on this stretch involves.

The deeper part of the lot, where the real trees are

The frontage gets the attention but Graycroft lots run deep, averaging around eight tenths of an acre with some considerably larger, and the back halves toward Nesbitt Lane hold what is left of the original tree cover. White oak, water oak, red cedar and a lot of sweetgum, most of it older than the houses.

A white oak stump back there is a different job from the Bradford pear out front. The wood is dense, the grind is slow, teeth dull faster and the flare is often partly buried under years of leaf fall. We price those by measured diameter across the widest point of the flare, not by trunk width at eye level, which is why we ask for a photo with a tape or a shovel laid across the cut. It keeps the number honest in both directions.

What the December 2023 storm left behind in Graycroft

The EF-2 that came through on the ninth of December 2023 tracked more than thirty-five miles across this part of Davidson County, and the damage in Madison was not a scatter of broken limbs, it was whole groves snapped and uprooted inside about fifty minutes. A great deal of the stump inventory in Graycroft dates precisely to that hour.

Most of those trees got cut and hauled within weeks and then the stumps sat, because with no permit required on single-family property there was nothing forcing the second half of the job. We are still grinding them. Storm stumps have their own quirks worth knowing about: an uprooted tree leaves a tipped plate and a crater rather than a flat cut, which is a different operation from grinding a stump that was felled cleanly, and it usually needs fill brought in afterward.
