The back of the lot is where the stump always is

The houses here went up between 1946 and the early seventies on lots that run close to an acre, and almost every one of them falls away toward the Cumberland at the rear. Whoever bought new planted shade at the back line, which was sensible then and is the reason so many Tahlena Avenue yards now have a silver maple stump sitting exactly where the ground starts to tip.

That position causes the specific headaches people call us about. A rider on a slope wants a clean line, and a stump means backing and turning on a grade every single week. Where an older one has already gone soft, the ground above it slumps into a shallow dish that collects runoff and then washes the mulch out of everything below it. And anyone trying to put a fence along the rear of one of these lots discovers fast that a post hole and a maple plate are competing for the same eighteen inches.

The grinder comes past the house, then works downhill

There is no rear alley in Madison Heights and no service road along the bluff. Whatever machine does the work has to come up the drive, through the side yard and around the house, which sets an upper limit on width before we even discuss the stump. Then it has to grind while standing on a grade.

Working downslope is the part homeowners do not anticipate. The wheel wants to walk downhill under its own cutting force, so the machine gets set above the stump and chocked, and the cut comes in shallower passes than we would take on flat ground. It adds time. It also protects your yard, because a grinder that slides on a wet slope leaves marks that outlast the stump by a couple of seasons. What a 1958 silver maple stump actually leaves behind

Silver maple was the standard choice then, and Metro's own forestry list now flags it as one to stop planting, which tells you how those decades went. A sixty-five-year-old one leaves a butt somewhere between thirty and forty inches with a flare wider than the trunk, plus surface roots running out twenty feet in every direction.

That is a large-hardwood job, generally in the three hundred fifty to seven hundred range depending on width and how far we have to carry the machine to reach it. Silver maple grinds fast for its size because the wood is soft, which is the one mercy in the species. The time goes into the flare, not the heartwood, and into the surface roots people usually ask us to take down while we are there.

The hole afterward, on ground that is already moving

On a level lot you fill a stump void, tamp it, and forget it. On a bluff lot, a loose backfill is a small landslide waiting for the next real rain. We grind these six to ten inches under grade, put the material back in layers rather than in one dump, tamp each layer, and crown the top so settlement lands you at flat instead of at a dip.

If sod or seed is going down after, get topsoil over the fill rather than seeding straight into grindings. Wood mixed with dirt drains oddly on a slope and drinks the nitrogen your new grass needs. A couple of wheelbarrows of dirt on top solves both problems and costs less than reseeding the patch twice.
