Why Madison's Carport Driveways Complicate Stump Jobs

Built for one car, not a piece of equipment

The split-level and low-ranch houses that make up most of Madison went up with a carport rather than an enclosed garage, and the driveways feeding them were sized for a single mid-century car, not for anything wider. Decades later, plenty of these driveways run narrower than what a full-size stump grinder needs to pass through comfortably, especially where a carport post sits close to the edge or a homeowner's added a second vehicle pad that pinches the approach even further.

A stump sitting in the back yard behind one of these houses often means the equipment has to clear that narrow front approach before it ever reaches open ground, which is a different problem than the stump's actual size presents.

A house built in 1962 wasn't accounting for a piece of equipment nearly four feet wide needing to pass between the carport post and the property line, and seventy years of settling fences and added landscaping haven't made that gap any more generous since.

Why we ask about the carport before we ask about the tree

On a lot of Madison calls, the first practical question isn't how wide the stump is - it's how wide the path to it runs. A carport post, a low roofline overhang, or a fence gate added since the house was built can all narrow the usable clearance well below what a full-size grinder needs, and guessing wrong means showing up with equipment that has to be walked in by hand or, worse, can't make the trip at all that day. Asking upfront about the tightest point along the path, not just the stump's diameter, is what actually determines which machine we load onto the trailer.

It's a short conversation, usually just one or two questions on the initial call, but it's the difference between arriving with the right equipment the first time and having to reschedule around a machine that simply can't make the turn. It's a small ask, but it saves a wasted trip more often than you'd expect.

The walk-behind grinder earns its keep here

We carry a narrower walk-behind machine specifically because of how many Madison properties need it, and it can clear openings a full-size grinder simply can't fit through - generally somewhere in the range of 30 inches or a bit less, versus the roughly 36 inches a standard machine wants. It works slower on a big stump than the full-size unit would, but slower and successful beats fast and unable to reach the job at all. Knowing ahead of time that a job needs the walk-behind also means we schedule the right amount of time for it, rather than budgeting for a quick full-size job and running behind.

For a job where even the walk-behind won't clear the opening, we'll sometimes disassemble a section of an old, already-failing fence panel with the owner's permission rather than force a wider machine through a gap it wasn't built for. We always put it back the way we found it once the grinder's done its work.

What this means for your quote

Tight carport access doesn't automatically mean a higher price, but it does mean we need accurate measurements before we quote rather than after. A stump that would be a quick job with open driveway access can take meaningfully longer once the walk-behind machine is the only option, and that time gets reflected honestly in the number rather than surprising you once we're already there working through it slower than expected. Telling us the gate or carport width when you first call is the single fastest way to get a number that won't need revising on the day.

It costs nothing to measure ahead of time, and it saves both of us the frustration of a wasted trip out to a Madison side yard that a phone call could have flagged as too tight in the first place. A rough guess on the phone is fine to start with, but an actual number gets you closer to a price that won't move.
